Assess Your Potential Opportunities

Now you have done your homework and identified a primary area for you to focus, or maybe a couple of different areas, where your skills, knowledge, and experience would be well received, and there are ample opportunities for you to explore. Congratulations! You have discovered lots of underserved needs out there waiting for you to respond to them.

The next step is to start zeroing in on the “where” part of the equation. This factor can be related to the city or state where you want to live, or even a more local focus such as a given neighborhood or region in a city. Also, factors like moving, commuting, or traveling all start to play into this part of the analysis.

Several years ago I was going through a similar process in my life and did not know what was important in my quest. I had done many things and could take advantage of a myriad of opportunities, but I was confused over which of the choices would serve me the best. I wound up taking a little time and simply listed all the potential factors I wanted to consider in evaluating where I should pursue an opportunity. Things like travel, location, rewards and benefits, and even the nature of the people I would be working with or the kind of power or influence I would have over my job or others were all listed. I then proceeded to prioritize each separate item. I assigned a 1 if I truly wanted to have it; a 2 if it was OK either way; and a 3 if it was not important.

I am telling you this story because I have come to believe that if you write something down and make it explicit, it will often come into your life. Whether you believe this happens because of a religious conviction or some other cause is not the point. What is important is it happens. Take the time to do it right. Lay out what is important to you. Think about where you want to explore your options and write it down.

Subsequently, I took a good look at my list, reflected on it, and then actually put it aside as I got involved in other activities in my current role. Several years later, I came across the list and was happy to see I had made a career decision that resulted in every one of the number 1 characteristics being realized, while some of the number 2 happened, and absolutely none of the number 3 items were present in my current career choice. I have to admit it was somewhat of an epiphany for me; I came to realize that we can approach the world from a place of abundance, and there are opportunities for all of us out there if we are just open to the possibilities.

Build your own list. Think about the following items as potential characteristics to include in your list. Prioritize them. Put it out there, and accept
